When I was a kid Steve made me a tape with some songs that he loved, and thinking back it may have been the very first mix tape ever made. In any event, I cherished it and listened to it over and over. One of the artists he chose was Leon Russell, who quickly became my favourite artist. Subsequently, when Leon Russell came to Vancouver, I got to attend my very first rock concert.
I remember being in the middle of the floor with Steve and John Daly and at a given point Steve realized that because I was shorter than everyone else I couldn’t see the stage. So, he decided I should sit on his shoulders so that I could see.
The reason I wanted to share this with you is because I think it serves as a metaphor for what Steve was all about. Anytime he came across someone who needed help, he would always, in essence do, what he did back then and put them on his shoulders. Often it was to his own detriment, but that never deterred him, he always remained that kind and giving soul that we all love and we all miss. So, with that I guess the best way we can honour my big brother is to be a bit more like him, and perhaps the next time you come across someone who needs help, think about Steve and maybe let them sit on your shoulders for a while.
